Human resources that can engage themselves in rapid industrialization and market-oriented economic reform are both qualitatively and quantitatively short in developing countries. On the other hand, the demand of human resources in the field of engineering that can flexibly deal with various matters such as advanced technology, global environmental problems and digital divides becomes stronger and stronger. In particular, the followings are highly needed: the development of systematic, efficient and effective education programs, human resources development in higher education (teaching staffs, personnel and administrators), sufficient educational and research system (for undergraduate and graduate) and specialization, the qualitative improvement of vocational technical training, industry-university link and active exchange between universities.
In this situation Japan is implementing Official Development Assistance (ODA). The then Ministry of Education submitted a report regarding promotion of international cooperation in the field of education responding to current international needs in June 1996. It reported that training and finding competent people in the field of economy and social development in developing countries were needed. The establishment of international cooperation centers for education, especially in the field of medicine, engineering, agriculture, pedagogy and social science, were proposed at that time, and as of 2001, international cooperation centers in pedagogy, agriculture and medicine are operated.
TUT has been vigorously conducting international exchange activities since the foundation of the university, and supporting to JICA through project-type technical cooperation projects, such as "Higher Education Development Support (HEDS) Project" in Indonesia, "Cooperation to Pathumwan Technical College Project" in Thailand, "Cooperation to the Expansion Project of the Engineering Faculty, Thammasat University" in Thailand and "Cooperation to Promote Riyadh Technical School of Electronics to a College" in Saudi Arabia. TUT also cooperate with Japan Indonesia Forum of Science and Technology, using the Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund (incumbent Japan Bank for International Cooperation) loan for "Institut Teknologi Bandung Reform Support Project." "New three Engineering Departments (Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Chemical Engineering) Establishment Support Project in Lampung University" at Indonesia is our own support project.
TUT’s international exchange activities and achievements in the field of engineering education have been recognized as excellence. As a result, International Cooperation Center for Engineering Education Development was established at TUT in April 2001.
